Club Chaos Winter Eye Candy Contest for Photography and Video: December 11th 2008 - January 10th 2009

  Carolyn Tann-Starr 2008

Uni-sphere, Flushing Meadows Park, Queens County, New York

This is our second Club Chaos Eye Candy event where we run parallel but dueling contests: ONE for PHOTOGRAPHY (Dec-ECP12) and ONE for VIDEO (Dec-ECV12). As previously stated, we are looking for your very best eye candy ladies and gentlemen and we want you to submit quality work worthy of a featured post.

Club Chaos will be hosting this Active Rain Contest with a little help from our friends, so please pay attention to what is mandatory and what is optional. As requested, we rotated some of the groups and have introduced Fraishe Aire and PAWS into the mix.

Each member has a choice of entering one or both contests. 200 points awarded per contest entry. If the work submitted is selected for placement, the 200 entry points will be rolled into the winning point spread. Contestants may only post one OUTSIDE BLOG link for each selected media a candidate decides to work in (e.g. you can not posts two entries for photography or two for video, but you can post an AR Outside Blog link for one contest category each.)

The panel consists of 5 judges: Michael Starr (NY), Melody Botting (TX), Amanda Hall (TX), Cindy Tsui (NY) and Carolyn Tann-Starr (NY).

Members choosing to participate must design and publish their original content specifically for Localism.com and their Active Rain Outside Blog. "Members Only" posts are prohibited from entry. All entries must be PG-13 Rated.

Active Rain Channel: "Club Chaos Eye Candy" has been created for your entries.

CONTEST RULES:

Section 1. [A] Participants must join the Active Rain group "Outside Blogs." [B] Help and the directions for setting up your Active Rain Outside Blog can be found on the group's home page written and explained by Active Brad. [C] All contest banter must remain PG-13. Do not post inappropriate photographs in the comment sections. [D] We will only accept AR Outside Blog links (which is not the same as the main dashboard where syndication of posts to Loacalism and Outside Blogs transpire by checking off submission boxes).

Section 2. [A] Participants must post contest submission(s) in the group "Outside Blogs" and one of the following 5 other groups: (1) Fraiche Aire (public); (2) Diary of a Realtor (public); (3) Whacked (public); (4) Positive Attitude For The Weary Soul (public) and (D5) Club Chaos (by invitation only: current members). You must post your contest submission links in the comment section of this official contest post in order for your post(s) to be judged and added to the blog post roll.

Section 3. You must post your contest submission(s) in Localism and the AR Outside Blog. Failing to do so disqualifies you. This is a very important point so I will say it again: FAILING TO DO SO DISQUALIFIES YOU... The contest judges are prohibited from entering as panel members but may participate in other events they are not actively judging, including future CC Eye Candy contests.

Note: 1. Every entry must be original content created by the participant. 2. Submissions must be titled "Club Chaos Eye Candy" and tagged to separate the contest entries. Meta Tags: Club Chaos Eye Candy DecECP12 (Photography Eye Candy) Club Chaos Eye Candy DecECV12 (Video Eye Candy).  Failing to use the appropriate Meta Tags to identify your contest submissions will result in your contest points not being awarded. Failing to publish the appropriate AR-OB links in the comment section of this OFFICIAL CONTEST post will result in your creation not being reviewed and no points will be awarded. 4. Minimum Post Requirements: 100 words and 5 Photographs and/or 100 words and one 1.5 minute video. (It would be nice if you would act like you were writing for a feature, but 100 words will do. It isn't the quantity, it's the quality!) 5. Do not combine two entries on one post. Do not submit multiple videos on one post. Do not exceed 5 minutes with your video submission. Do not include music unless (a) you own the copyright or (b) have written permission from the rights owner to use their music (I will spot check if you do). Do not include any television or radio transmissions or visuals in the background of your videos. Do not trespass on any property to complete your project.

2000 points for 1st Place in Photography, 2000 points for 1st Place in Video.

1500 points for 2ndPlace in Photography, 1500 points for 2nd Place in Video.

1000 points for 3rd Place in Photography, 1000 points for 3rd Place in Video.

500 points for 4th Place in Photography, 500 points for 4th Place in Video.

Each contest entry: 200 points. WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON 01/12/2009

2000 points for 1st Place in Photography: Elizabeth Weintraub

Good job C.  I love that sphere.  I remember it from the 1964 World's Fair One of my earliest memories.

No way can I shoot photos as great as you, C. I'll have to give this contest some thought. There's not a lot of eye candy in winter around here when skies are overcast and it's raining. However, this would give me an excellent excuse to buy a star filter thingie for my lens.

I can't wait to see what you guys come up with. I have been chatting with my girlfriend Cindy (Twitter ID @Cindy2083) who is very happy to be helping us out with judging the contest. She is a brand new tweet peep and just joined Twitter. Has no idea how it works, but is willing to learn, which is very cool. I gave her a handful of tweet peeps to follow and she is looking forward to going on a few AR road trips with me to meet you guys. Very cool! Now if I can just get her to post a blog post in Club Chaos (LMAO). I may have beg... Seriously! Chicka skydives and goes to the dojo and is a very interesting, fun lady.  ;-)

Paddy, it's pretty hard to forget once you see that puppy come into view. Wow... I never get tired of checking it out. I would love to shoot this in the moonlight one day, but I'd need a police escort (LOL). Parks usually close at sundown (or specific times as posted) and I would hate to get arrested or mugged for being there. That much stainless steel in the moonlight has got to be very pretty... :-)

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 9 years ago

LOL @ Elizabeth. The rain can be very mysterious in the right lighting. Winter is more interesting than you think. The cloud formations are quite stunning at sundown and sunrise. If your digital camera can convert color to black and white or sepia, you should go experiment shooting contrasting patterns in the trees, or in the textures of natural objects as tight closeups. Explore your world in ways you may not have thought of before. That is the fun of eye candy. It's all about what you see and how you see it.

Winter shots do not have to be huge, they can be micro as well... :-)

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 9 years ago

JL, we decided to let you guys show us what you find interesting about Winter your way. It's all about the eye candy. It's all about you sharing with us what you see during Winter where you are. Show off your areas as you see fit. You are writing for localism. :-)

The Spring Eye Candy contest will have a historical and landmarks theme. We're going to have a very special group helping us host it. There is nothing stopping any of you from using that theme if you would like to test it out, or any other theme you see fit. Just go hyper-local with your camera to showcase what goes on during Winter time. This one is just all about Winter. Not everyone gets snow, so don't worry if you don't have any. Show us what you do have... Teach me something new about where you are. I'm really looking forward to every single post. :-)

Carolyn, Just a little confused on tags and meta tags. I posted a "test blog" to see if everything was as you request. Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 9 years ago

Finally getting a little snow.  It just isn't winter w/o snow :~)  Question on rule 2. Submissions must be titled "Club Chaos Eye Candy".  I was just thinking that might seem like a strange title to a prospect passing through Localism.

Posted by Terri Visser, CRS - 12 Years Selling Central Oregon Real Estate (Desert Sky Real Estate, LLC) about 9 years ago

Terri, not at all. ;-)

"Club Chaos Eye Candy" should be thought of as a Service Mark and/or Trade Mark the founders are promoting. We are branding this association. It's our virtual brand.

Google the phrase "Club Chaos." We are the 9th position ("Active Rain Group: Club Chaos") out of 575,000 entries and have stayed on page 1 of Google for a reason. It's because this group is being promoted and branded by the founders every single day, which benefits Active Rain and it benefits our writers.

People who are not expecting to find us frequently do because they are looking for something else and have no idea what to expect, so they click the link out of curiosity and discover our home page. I get a lot of e-mail because my name is a link as the founder of this group. People click that link. 5 -30 peeks daily may not seem like much, but it adds up and most important it frequently results in the public making contact with me and brings us all new readers who decide to stick around and bookmark our group page. I get a lot of DMs because of it and every single writer here is a very precious resource. It is a huge compliment when people make requests to see certain neighborhoods they are interested in. So off I go to do a little jogging and accommodate them. :-)

My "job" as a co-founder with Amanda Hall and Melody Botting is to get our members discovered. It is to help monetize this site (and eventually our association's brand) so we will always have a place to blog and our lovely AR staff will never have to shut down because they can't afford the host servers. They do well, we do well. I got three written job offers and turned down $$$ regarding syndication of my work from rival on-line companies for the following Localism posts:

http://localism.com/blog/ny/flushing/posts/586894/Club-Chaos-Eye-Candy

http://activerain.com/blogsview/617300/Localism-Success-Story-Club

http://activerain.com/blogsview/596878/Club-Chaos-Eye-Candy-Welcome-to-a-Flushing-Tour-of-Homes-Vol-4

These video clips (and others) went viral and now people Google "Club Chaos Localism" because they remember the website and brand name:

http://uk.truveo.com/Club-Chaos-Eye-Candy-Oct-2008-Outside-Blog-Minion/id/582480392

http://www.mixpo.com/videoad/BQJFgbKcToiMYA-DIK2DZg/Club-Chaos-Ellenville-Blueberry-Fest

Just because AR is free doesn't mean one should jump ship at offers of making a little $$$. Please do not make that mistake. Any offer a member receives that means you can't be here is not an offer, its manipulation. Watch out for anti-competition clauses that will keep you away from your blogs, people. Don't ever sell your blog either. Sell a sponsor link if you must but do not give up the very vehicle that got you to the place where people now "want you," or claim they have "discovered your talent." What they have discovered is your Google Juice and following and want to make use of your connections to generate revenue from your work. Make them pay for a license to syndicate or re-publish, but not for the full rights to your work or you. There are plenty of lawfirms in AR. Use one. :-)

The CC EyE Candy Contest is designed to increase your SEO while giving you guys the same opportunity to capitalize off of the brand name that I am building with Mel and Amanda. Everywhere I go I brag about blogging for AR, my OB and Localism. I speak of each as if it is a separate and distinct entity. I think of them this way because they each have their own set of followers who gravitate towards the different designs.

Very important: Never lump your fans into the same category, discover which area of your writing they follow and cater to them, syndicating different posts to different blogs so they are not 100% the same. That is what is so cool about the re-blog. You should support your friends and break up the Localism v OB line up (e.g. deliberately choosing to periodically syndicate certain posts to Localism and others to your OB). You will get more readers that way.

Also, I want you guys to pull over 100 e-mails a day like I do by getting people addicted to your hyper-local posts and writing style. After all, you can't get anymore hyper-local than an actual picture of a place accompanied by a brief story. Doesn't matter what the story is as long as you connect them to the area in an interesting way. Your ability to tell a story will make them wonder what you are going to talk about next. People never have any idea what I am going to write until it pops up on the blog roll. Anticipation is a wonderful thing. If you hook them they will have questions or make requests.

I'm looking to connect with the public and build my readership because I have other projects in mind. I'm working on a series of eye candy books and have been sorting thousands of photographs so I can go hyper-local and be a little humorous one section of the City of New York at a time. I hope to eventually be working with you guys to collect your photographs for a different type of publication that will takes readers on a cross country tour (compliments of your eye candy and writing styles). That is one of my goals and I have a publisher interested if I do a good job with my first project. Co-writing and splitting royalties with you guys down the road would be an honor. Don't wait for my permission, run with the ball. Hook up with your peeps and start developing your publications. That's how you monetize your blog while you are hanging out here. (1) Brand your name first, (2) Make Active Rain the place they need to be to find you, or what ever list of sites you have you want to support, (3) give those sites props for having you there and (4) make your projects happen. In the meantime I want and need more of us on page 1 on Google for that specific service mark term besides our group home page. THAT MEANS you all must use Club Chaos Eye Candy as the first four words of your post titles then what ever else you would like to call it.

The more that phrase shows up on this home page the higher up higher up the page moves.

The more traffic to our individual eye candy posts, our opportunity to get a member (or more of us) on page 1 of Google for that generic term increases. Your writing clout will increase when you approach your potential sponsors or prospects for your own writing projects as well because the followers and activity creates BUZZ.

That is what I mean about eventually monetizing this association. You should be like Elizabeth Weintraub and Margaret Rome: putting your ideas into publications. You can start with your fave bog posts. Collect them and build upon them making them chapters in your books. As we go along the blueprints for doing so and potential people to contact will be laid out right here for the group to run with the ball.

BTW, don't wait for me, Google it and figure out how to and run with the ball. The most important thing is to always give the kudos and props back to AR for making it possible to syndicate your projects into the blogospehere. We do well, we bring them advertising revenue because the viewers are hanging around looking for original content. We get to advertise them and ourselves and everyone gets to enjoy a win-win situation. I'm learning that from my Donald Trump studies. It's all about getting a good team together and letting everyone do what they do best.

There is a method to your Chaotic Mama's madness. I know that you bring out my personal best and make me want to be a better blogger and more transparent writer. I have lots of flaws but I know i am accepted here and I love my virtual family for that and am very protective of my bay-bays because I know we each have our own set of problems and need a place where we can just be ourselves.

You guys ROCK! :-)

Thank you Terri for letting me high-jack your answer (LOL). I'm glad you brought this up. ;-)

Terri, I have been known to do the unexpected (LOL). Besides, you brought up a very good point and if you are thinking this, I am sure others are as well. It's all about having fun with the SEO and cross linking to each other so everyone can enjoy the ride rather than a few of us. :-)

C... as tempted as I am to enter this contest, the rules are too onerous, and beyond my comprehension.  Post to Localism and outside blogs?.... I don't even know what to do about a meta-tag...

maybe I'm just a techno-feeb...  but it's just beyond me.  sorry.

and the sphere IS from the 1964 NY World's Fair... I remember it... I was there!

Posted by Alan May, Helping you find your way home. (Coldwell Banker Residential) about 9 years ago

Alan, it is two check boxes which makes it no more difficult than posting to a group (LOL). I reserve comment on it being difficult to post a link in the contest comment section (ROTFLMAO). I can't stop laughing because people do that way too much (even when they are not supposed to) for it to be tricky when we are begging for links to look at. Too funny.

I hope you change your mind, sweetie. Seriously!  ;-)

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 9 years ago

allrighty, C... that sounds easy enough, now that you explained it (cause I had no idea what that meant)... and what about metatags... what are those?

Posted by Alan May, Helping you find your way home. (Coldwell Banker Residential) about 9 years ago

Meta Tags are anything you type on the "Tag line" that is the first input slot next to the term "Tags." I made a red tick mark for you in the photograph to catch your attention.

For your photography entry you would type "Club Chaos Eye Candy, DecECP12" and if you also do the video contest, then for that entry you would type "Club Chaos Eye Candy, DecECV12."

You would then check off the box for Active Rain Channels and type "Club Chaos Eye Candy" (as well as check the box for Localism and Outside Blog).

Post a link in the comment section so we can find your work and you are done. We will update the contest post with your name and link back to your Outside Blog in the contest roll.

Cheryl W, very interesting, but not for this particular type of photography contest. We're supposed to be going hyper-local here and I am trying sooooooo hard not to crack an off color joke. Actually, I can think of several  (LMAO). Too funny! Now go out and get to work and bring me some geography back, bay-bay! ;-)

I'm not sure I have the definition of eye candy for this contest.  Do the pictures have to be of places, landmarks only?  Can they be of animals or birds or ice on branches?

Posted by Sharon Tara, New Hampshire Home Stager (Sharon Tara Transformations) about 9 years ago

Alan, looking forward to it. :-)

Sharon T, think of eye candy as beauty in the eye of the beholder. Show me what you see during Winter. You can show me anything you want. Go hyper-local in your own back yard if you like. We wanna see what you see through your eyes. ;-)

EMPTY VIDEO SLOTS?  EMPTY VIDEO SLOTS?

GEEZ... I'm going back to bed...

Not having enough video eye candy is cruel and unusual punishment. I only waited an entire month for FOUR videos.

SERIOUSLY!!!

I am soooo gonna lecture you guys when I wake back up again (LMAO). Wordy C will be making an appearance later on...

Alan May and Colleen Lane you can't hide. You tease me in the comment section and don't post my links - duh?

I want my links! I want my eye candy! I'm gonna go visit Ruthmarie Hicks and Cindy Tsui today. By the time I get back downstate to Cindy's house I expect to see what's missing NOT MISSING.(Big hint for Alan and Colleen - LOL).

I've got two brick and mortars judging this contest with me. We're going to be call conferencing with the TX twins who are hanging out with Liz Moras from Canada. HERE IS ME YELLING AT YOU TO GET BUSY! You do not want Amanda Hall and Melody Botting virtually yelling at you as well. In case you didn't notice the first time: YES! I AM STILL YELLING AT YOU! (LOL)

Seriously. Picture Mandycap judging a contest with empty slots. Seriously! This conversation is going to be hilarious (LMAO).

BTW, Little Minion TV is about to launch a Team Video-Blog on Active Rain. We're going hyperlocal-live. My shorties are hosting community walks and field trips to fun, cool think and do spots and landmarks. We're also gonna be cooking up more Active Rain Tweet-ups, so stay tuned.

I'll bring you back some upstate eye candy later. Gotta get the little people out of the tub. We are on the hunt for eye candy. <3 C.

I am thrilled beyond words, C and esteemed members of the judging committee. I can't believe that an entry I wrote while on vacation -- sitting there in a dark room in the wee morning hours, listening to the waves pound the shore and maneuvering my laptop so the eerie alien light wouldn't wake my husband as I tapped the keyboard and entered photos -- god forbid should I walk out in the hall again with my teeth in to retrieve the paper -- would win first place! Thank you a bazillion times.

Sorry I didn't get over here sooner to express my gratitude and appreciation but I've been busy hating Countrywide with every fiber of my being . . . and let me tell you, that zaps a lot of energy.

LMAO @ Elizabeth. You certainly have a way with words (ROTFL). I am so glad you entered the contest. Congrats on your win, sweetie. <3 C. :-)

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 9 years ago

C - I just wanted to express my appreciation for all the hard work you put into these contests.  I know it must be extremely time consuming to write the rules, keep up with the questions and comments, judge the thing, etc etc.  I am thankful to have won (although I can't take credit for it - I think the judges just liked my kids in the video :) and I think KM did a great job with her video.  She is positioning herself to be way ahead of the curve when the rest of the agents discover video as an outlet for their real estate business.

I think that, over time, other agents will see the power of full motion video for their listings, area tours, personal profile "spots", and so many other possibilities.  I hope that next time, you'll have plenty of videos to judge.

Also, congrats to the photo winners!
