I have a young adult Advance Reader Copy of "Grimsley Hollows" by author Nickey Storey

I do not know the official release date (yet), but I do know that I've been given the privilege of reading it after the final edit copy. That is very cool. My 9 year old Noah is going to love this book. He is fond of Halloween, so I am going to save this as an October gift for the wee people.

This is Nickey Storey-Bailey's first Young Adult novel. She is my Kim-Stream, V-Peep, Twitter, Facebook social media gal pal from GA. We have been chatting about our writing projects on-line and with Skype most of the summer while lurking on the blogs and business pages of some of our fave authors.

Kim Harrison and Vicki Pettersson have inspired a lot of us to keep writing and find our own voice. They have endlessly entertained us about the reality of being a writer while giving stellar advice and insight on their blogs. I've destroyed my book so many times my eyes have crossed, but the ultimate goal is to create the best book in us at the time of the writing, so I keep fixing and tweaking it. As we grow, so will our books/writing...

Nickey has done an amazing job of growing as a writer. It's a lonely process at times because there is no one but you and the characters in your head and heart having a conversation. When Kim talked about joining writing workshops she had nothing but praise for her writing friends who were there supporting her efforts as a new writer. She made it clear that having friends who write would one day be a lifeline when you get to the crossroads of having to make the decision of doing something afraid. Handing over your manuscript for publication is not easy. It's like sending your kids out into the world knowing you can not protect them but hoping they will do well and society esteems them.

I discovered from chatting with Editor Debi Murray that most writers have angst about people not liking their work and will write/re-write their novels to the point where they can no longer be objective about their own work. Been there, done that, still doing it (sigh). Like Nickey, one day I am going to have to let my manuscript go, take a deep breath, then nervously join the ranks of published authors...

I probably wont be my usual facetious, annoying snarky self on that day. I will probably be sitting in the corner of Starbucks secretly stressed out about who is reading my Advance Reader Copies and hoping that an author somewhere likes my work enough to actually want to be a quote on my book jacket cover...

As I look at the gorgeous YA cover of Nickie's book I wish I were a published author so I could volunteer how much I like my girlfriend's YA novel on her book jacket. I can't do that now (haven't published my book yet - frustrated sigh) but one day I will be able to... (January 2012 - evil grin). For now, I can blog and say that I like her book and am looking forward to reading chapters as bed time stories to my kids. I am very proud of my social media friend. Being a published author is a huge step for any new author.
