Beginning a Google search with an image is rather interesting... I've been playing with my images for a while. All you have to do is drag and drop the image in the search box. Click on the link and check out a very cool thing that Google has done. ;-)

Hi C - The new Google photo search will probably enable us to find a lot of situations where people use our photographs and graphics without obtaining permission.

Posted by FN LN about 7 years ago

I had no idea someone could do such a thing.

Michelle, you can check to see if people have taken your photographs off of your blog and used them without permission. You can search by image. My kid is on a website he shouldn't show up on... Click the link, click the try me blue button anf drag an image intothe image search box.

Marc, I've been playing with this for an hour. My images are on all sorts of websites that I had no idea about...

That's interesting concept, C Tann. I have used some sites that help you find the identical images but was not aware of this from Google - great info! Thanks for sharing.

Jim and Linda I got a SMS from a gal pal to hop on over and give it a whirl. She found my eldest son Noah and thought I should know about the unauthorized use of his 2008 image so I tried a picture of Stephen sitting on my desktop and holy cow the kid was somewhere he shouldn't be. I guess images from old blog posts are supposed to go unnoticed, eh? (LOL)

Now I'm randomly testing my recent pictures to see if my drawings are going places too (LOL).

Larry, best fun I've had tonight! I may have to write another blog post to show you guys some of the whacked places my stuff is migrating to. OMG - a few links even lead to the entire post being copied. Wow... They left all the links and info in including the copyright notice and disclaimer. People who swipe digital stuff are strange. I bet they thought they were re-blogging (LOL). ;-)

OMG - Gayle - the irony of it!!!! I can't remember the last time I've been this stunned. My girlfriend thinks I should be flattered that people are stealing from me but has enough sense to agree my kids should be off limits. Fan sites I leave alone because I am a fan and get twitterpated people (LOL).However, I do have to figure out what I'm going to do with a growing number of websites that swiped my kids pics for commercial use tomorrow. I may have to draft take-down notices in Word, then send them out as an e-mail attachment. I'm hoping for reasonable responses because the little minions are my little models not stock photography  (sigh).

Karen, my girlfriends are helping me figure out just how viral some of our images have gone. We're trying to select ones with unique identifiers so we don't get something close but the actual exact photograph. Google places similar photographs on the bottom.

Gayle, this really is a marvelously useful feature. It's fun discovering what people have been up to with my stuff. I look at the sights and think What the hell are you thinking??? I drove over 700 miles to Cincinnati, paid gas, tolls and multiple hotel rooms for you to casually swipe my photographs? The virtual brawl is on tomorrow morning you naughty, naughty website (LOL). Oooops. That would be today. ;-)

C Tann-Star---what a discovery!  Now I am going to be watching for you post telling us how to deal with people who have stolen our photos---or should we sick Lenn Harley on this?  This one has to be featured.  This is something everyone who blogs needs to know!!  Can't thank you enough!!

Aida, it defintely says drag and drop but you can upload if you want to. Go here directly to the image box and drag a picture where people normally want to type phrases: http://images.google.com/

John, you are very welcome. As soon as I started playing with it I knew I had to tell my blogging buddies about it. This thing is amazing. :-)

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 7 years ago

OMG - I am sooooo linking to Lenn when I write the next post. Pat, I'm laughing because you can see my old Remax cards on the desk at Stephen's feet and my two diplomas have my name on them on the wall behind my son. My name and the year is still watermarked on the bottom of the photograph. What are people thinking when they do this? I'm going to be really nice about this when I do start talking to the websites because I believe people are reasonable and generally mean well. :-)

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 7 years ago

C - I just played around with the search since my previous comment.  I thought I'd try Lenn's blog since her maps and graphics tend to be found all over the internet.  I tried a couple of her posts and very quickly found her material on other sites so I sent her a private e-mail.  It will be very useful for those looking for copyright infringement.

The other suggestions from Google are often quite off-base.

Posted by Terrie Leighton, Reno Real Estate Agent ~ Selling Homes in Reno (Ferrari-Lund Real Estate ) about 7 years ago

Marc, my friends suggested I make a score card of some of our interesting search moments with the images and the number of sites the pics have migrated to so when we link back to Lenn Harley's copyright advice  people will understand why it's not a good idea to just take images without permission.

If they found my blog to swipe the photographs then that means they ignored the fact that my cell phone and an e-mail link was available to ask permission to use the material.

It also means they ignored the copyright notice that is on the side bar and embedded at the bottom of every single post I generate on ActiveRain.

What is permissible regarding use is clearly in my notice/disclaimer in the signature. That's why we're collecting screen shots before we contact the websites about taking the stuff down. We are also considering granting permision because a number of sites were in compliance about the linking back and credits although remiss in asking permission (LOL).

It's going to be late night tonight... It may take several days to do this properly because what happens next depends upon how reasonable we are towards one another (sigh).

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 7 years ago

John, you are very welcome.

Terrie, finding my shorties where they don't belong triggers a mommy getting ready for a fight response. I am very transparent about my kids and their learning disabilities and our lives in general so a lot of Autism/PDD-NOS professionals are in contact with me. I'm always giving people permission to use stuff and keep track of what they are doing with it. If they show me I can trust them then I respect their creativity. However, if they disrespect and exploit the wee people that's the end of our association.

Having strangers with no virtual relationship just take my images over is alarming because they're my children. They model and work for me. They have a right to their input and I always ask them if they want to do a project. Noah loves seeing himself on-line. My kids lives in YouTube, check out ActiveRain and visit their Facebook page.

My kids click on the pictures of the people who like their FB page and lurk in your FB streams and think of Rainers as their friends. They actually bug me about going back to RainCamp for more RainCookies (LOL). Stephen is in love with Margaret Rome. The Chocolate House and the Chocolate Car are the Holy Grail of blogging for that kid.

They understand the concept of busines relationships, blogging, real estate, music and art because I take them to work with me. Noah loves photography and is very good at it.

My kids showing up in cyberspace where they are not supposed to be is very disturbing to me as a mom more than as a blogger because it violates what I have been trying to teach them regarding what I do and it robs them of their right to say yes or no to a project.

Irene, you'd might be surprised about where your head shot may be. I dropped mine in and it showed up on a few sites I don't use. It appears I have musician issues (LOL).

Connie, I took a brief nap and am at it again. The Outside Blog Minion Report made it to other sites (LOL).

Barb, at some point I stopped watermarking a lot of shots out of being lazy. Looks like I may go back to my old habit of putting my name on them. Having the copyright/disclaimer on each post was one reason I left the pictures pristine. Stephen's watermark didn't stop his photograph from being used (sigh). Having the Outside Blog Minion Report icon didn't deter those images being used either...

Gabe, it can get a bit addictive (LOL). Neat bit of fun though. :-)

Ginny, it is amazing when you do find out where some of your visual stuff has wandered off to.

Dave, I know what you mean. Little man should be on my YouTube channel, Facebook and ActiveRain (or my Wordpress blog). I'll be working on getting my pictures back where they belong (in my virtual home). :-)

Dangy, you are welcome. I may have to take another nap so I can be pleasant on the phone (LOL). ;-)

Debra, that is a great feature, eh? Looking forward to seeing what else Google comes up with. :-)

Charles, tracking architectural designs would be a wild ride!!! I'd love to see that. My kids would be in construction heaven. They think they're Bob the Builder Realtors (LOL). ;-)

Paula, I hope you do give it a try. Very interesting, especially the similar photographs they place on the bottom.

Gail C, very cool indeed! ;-)

John, the computing power involved is massive!!! I am amazed at the matching power. The algorithms must be off the chain for this bit of mischief. :-)

Richard, your photography is amazing. I can't wait to see/hear how your search project turns out. :-)

Rueben, I've wished that myself several times. Now we have a neat tool to use. :-)

Fernando, I discovered myself re-blogged a few times I didn't know about too. Nice! :-)

Bill G, I bet a whole bunch of very interesting stuff is going to be popping up behind this bit of search engine mischief. I've been entertained for hours. ;-)

Petra, thank you, I agree and you are very welcome.

Michael, I'm glad you found it useful. It's teaching me quite a bit about how people use what they discover on other websites. Some are more tasteful and respectful than others. :-)

She is in Texas and probably thought I'd never find out. Thank you for the information...now to go and take of this problem. Any ideas on how to handle it? Perhaps a blog...

Posted by Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can!, So Utah Residential, Referral & Relocation REALTOR (Prado Real Estate South) about 7 years ago

CTann - this is great. sure saves me time getting my notifications in my daily reader for those offenders out there that have been clipping my pics.... Much appreciated

Posted by Robert Hammerstein, Bergen County NJ Real Estate (Keller Williams Valley Realty) about 7 years ago

Wanda, first contact is always a delicate situation because we don't know what the intentions of the person was. Some don't realize they are not supposed to do this and think of it as borrowing something useful they like and are clueless regarding copyrights in contrast to others who willfully do wrong playing the odds that they don't get caught.

My approach is first contact should usually be a papertrail with second contact a follow up phone call. E-mails are cool. The server processing them provide a third party time stamp. I also like typing Skype chats because you can save the conversations.

How you decide to handle it depends upon what you are comfortable with and what your goals are (e.g. a take down, deciding to grant permission, going for a settlement or litigation).

I don't like hurting people if I don't have to but I will if someone shows me it's the only thing he/she/they understand. I start with a lets be friendly and reasonable approach but I don't have a problem letting people know that I have a b*tch switch they do not want to flip regarding this subject. Especially when it comes to my kids... ;-)

Business trade marks, service marks and brand icons are very important so it's a serious thing to use them contrary to the copyright owners policy or swipe them to convert for a different use without permission. My icons are recognizable so when people see them they think affiliation... I've had blog readers let me know a rapper in CA was using my name because he thought Tann Starr was a cool stage name. They knew it wasn't me when they went and blasted him for it. He apologized when I asked him to stop. He really had no idea I was a real person and not a branded zazzle tee shirt (LOL).

I guess Timberland also being a shoe gave him the idea... I could be wrong about that (LOL). It was nice having music fans be outraged I wasn't performing. They came to see Tann Starr and got quite a surprise. Social media made me accessible to their complaints. Ambassadors of Chaos belongs to me. I had to stop someone trying to use those trade and service marks as well. This Google tool is going to be a great asset. ;-)

Very interesting stuff.  I had heard about Facebook's face recognition capabilities and I think there's a day coming soon where we'll be able to google photos for a person which will be very interesting (and probably very scary in a way).

Robert, this is going to become part of my morning and nightly ritual. I plan to check a few images a day, starting with the 2008 collection on my blog. I starting writing on-line April 2008 so this may take a while. I've over 1200 posts to check (sigh). :-)

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 7 years ago

C~ Thank you for your well thought-out answer and will take your advice. I'd like to see what the intentions were and then move forward from there.

Posted by Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can!, So Utah Residential, Referral & Relocation REALTOR (Prado Real Estate South) about 7 years ago

Michael, the face recognition programs are like a double edged sword. They are fascinating but don't always get the images right. The new cameras auto embed geo-tag meta data so they can pin point by satellite the general area where the camera was when when the photo was taken (unless you disable the feature) so our shots can potentially reveal more than who we are with, they may also tell where we are by GPS coding.

I love and hate Facebook. The data mining there can get complicated because our friends and relatives can be our own worse enemies by not policing their own actions and reading the instructions that came with their electronics (LOL).

Posted by C Tann-Starr (Tann Starr & Associates, Inc.) about 7 years ago

Wanda, I hope it goes well for both of you. It can get stressful. I've been in a few cat fights where I had to give my attorney girlfriend a dollar so I could honestly say I've just retained a lawyer (LOL).

Interesting, but doesn't seem to work for me? I "know" my face shot is all over the place, but dragging it into the images.google.com site merely shows the photo back to me with the location from which I dragged it. How are you getting this to work?

Hi C-Tann - Such a cute son!  Thanks for the Google link.  I'll be watching the video and trying out the service.

C,

You do have to admit that is partially your son's fault for being so cute.  But seriously, this is incredibly interesting.  I am going to check this out when I have some time.

Terrific information.  I can see why you would be upset to have your son's image used on sites that aren't managed by you.

That's crazy, noting is private on the web! Transparency is key moving forward, thank you Gary Vaynerchuk!

Sharon, I've been avoiding a few confrontations as well so I get you in that regard (LOL). We do have the right as copyright holders to grant permission. I've silently checked out fan sites and let the use go unchallenged or simply said thank you because of their respectful use and good intentions. It's our prerogative to use a common sense approach to what we discover about what others are doing with our visuals. :-)

I'm a huge Kim Harrison fan and when I doodle my version of her book characters I am well aware of the fact that those characters belong to her, not me. I share my version of them on her Facebook author business page and chat with her and other fans about her work. I have a Kimi pile that absolutely no one can touch or exploit for any reason. That's her stuff created for our brief social media chats and any Harrison fan that asks me for a copy gets the free cartoon photograph of their choice e-mailed to them because of our mutual admiration of the Hollows series. There is no commercial exploitation going on. I happily promote her work because I like it and if the author sent me an e-mail and said burn 'em I'd torch them in a garbage can two minutes later because I have mad respect for who she is and what she does and the fact that I have a tiny, narrow, limited bit of permission to share my artistic interpretations of what her work inspires and means to me.

If you are not careful fan art can get you in mad trouble so I appreciate and enjoy playing in Facebook and making new virtual friends because of it.

When I blog about my Kim Harrison doodles on ActiveRain I always attribute the characters specifically to her because she created them, not me. I just created my version of a visual based upon being inspired by what she wrote. She can do what ever she wants with them. They are hers for the taking.

When I was going to mail them off to her P.O. Box she specifically told me my art should be shared. So I share them in the Kim-Stream, spoof about 'em on my blog but would never let anyone take commercial advantage of their existence in any way other than as FREE Kimi fan art for the Kim-Stream peeps.

I am real serious about protecting the Kimi pile. You guys have no idea of the crap I have had to say no to because we can't get a poster to save our lives over there (yet - LOL). I can not be tempted on this, I know the rules so don't ask (and yes, I have been asked all sorts of commercial stuff and the answer is no. Dawn has an agent. Go there). Dawn Cook/Kim Harrison is the boss of what goes on in the Kim-Stream. I am a very happy fan over there who is enjoying playing social media tag with an amazing NY Times Bestselling author. My virtual wrath would be unimaginable if I ever caught someone exploiting those illustrations. I'd be camped out in Lenn Harley's driveway preparing for a copyright violation summit meeting (LMAO).

That's why when I say use your common sense people I really, really mean it. If you ask someone a question they will eventually answer you. Kim Harrison has answered every single one of my questions within 72 hours or less. I don't even do that (LOL).

I am trying to respond to everyone today. I don't know if I can keep up with it but I will try. I am getting a lot of e-mail regarding this post (and I can NOT give legal advice - sigh). ;-)

Lisa and Robert, a daily adventure indeed! :-)

Nathan, this thing is simply amazing!!!

Gabrielle, I wish I knew what you were doing over there (sigh). Drag and drop your face avatar in the search box that you would normally type words into for it to upload and find the images http://images.google.com

Pamela, it's great. Check out the video and try it out. It's kinda fun when you're not being periodically annoyed by stolen images (LOL). :-)

LOL@ Marcy. The little minions are mad cute, eh? I'm on Noah patrol right now (grin). I'm still surprised at the few things we've managed to catch from randomly selecting favorite blog moment picture... ;-)

Pat, as a parent you'd want to nip that bit of photo mischief in the bud as fast as you can. The kids have been all over my blog and model on my album covers so I understand some people assuming they are models in stock photography but they are not. It's all original content. Over a year ago one guy argued then  lied and said he brought stock photography and had a model's release. My response: show me the receipt and signature asshole because I'm their friggin' Mama. Photo was down in less than 30 minutes. I remember being angry for days... I have not sued anyone over my pictures. I hope I never have to. I thought he might be the one but we both soon realized the expense and loss of time would be detrimental to our businesses. I didn't want a confession of guilt, I simply wanted the picture taken down.

Matthew it is off the hook crazy. Seriously...

C, that is just soooo AWESOME that Google has this "reverse image search" capability! I never knew! This is just one of the very reasons why I love AR...is that I learn so many wonderful things from members like you. :)

I'm bookmarking and re-blogging this...and I would have suggested it if I saw this earlier! :)

That is so trippy, gets us thinking twice if we have EVER scraped a photo before.  Come on, admit it.  I'll admit it.  However, I have stopped that practice a long time ago and have always tried to have my own original photos if I could.  But now it seems this will add a new skill to figuring things out with pictures and that Google does know everything.  I think it has SEO implications.

I play around with Google Images all the time and not once have I ever thought to google my own images.  Your post reminds me of a report I saw on the news a few years ago.  It was about a mother who found a picture of her baby on a "Baby for Sale" website.  I never forgot the emotional turmoil she went through.  I hope you are successful in getting others to take down your son's picture.  I probably would not be too pleased about that.  Thanks for sharing this information!

VERY interesting C!  I have found my articles on others' sites but, I guess my photos aren't good enough to steal!  LOL  I can't believe the nerve of some people who think that they can just grab what you've worked so hard on to capture and write.  Good stuff--I'm off to check this out!

Thank you, Debbie. I slowed down and almost stopped writing on Examiner.com because of the article swiping. It drove me crazy. I hated having to deal with that issue so I stayed put on the websites I owned because I can do a take down notice if I want to as opposed to bugging someone else to do it because I'm writing for them. Working on a follow up of this post. :-)

Wow, I'm a little late catching up here, but...wow, again!  I had no idea and I can't wait to try it out!  Funny, when I first started blogging back in January, I was so paranoid of violating copyright that I still to this day use no photos or sketches but my own!  Thank goodness for my "iclipart" subscription or I'd have to spend all my time creating every visual I use...
