How To Monetize Your Blog 101 - Lesson 11 - Purchasing ISBN Numbers in the USA
If you don't have a MyIdentifiers.com account you should consider getting one if you plan on publishing under your own imprint. If you are publishing under the imprint of another entity they will usually get the ISBN number for you. The shorties and I are fond of our Wordy C logo and have new business cards in progress for our start up. There's tee shirts and mugs coming too because we like those, but I digress... ;-)
If you click the above MyIdentifiers link you will discover that "Bowker Identifier Services can help you purchase an ISBN, for both print books and e-books, and help you manage your account. Once you submit your title information, it becomes part of the bibliographic databases at Bowker and appears in Books In Print, allowing for discover-ability by bookstores and libraries who look for publications to purchase."
Here's the quote everyone I asked sent me:
"The U.S. ISBN Agency at Bowker, is the only official source of ISBNs in the United States and its territories. With an ISBN you can manufacture your publication and sell them anywhere in the world. The US ISBN Agency can only assign ISBNs to publishers located in the United States and its territories. Publishers located in other countries must obtain their ISBNs from their local ISBN Agency. The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and identify one title or one unique edition of a title from one specific publisher. An ISBN allows for more efficient marketing and cataloging of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers, and distributors."
The free PDFs on this website are a must have. Check out Bar Code Basics to see what I mean. Knowledge is power, people. ;-)

Thanks C. Now all I need is an audience of people interested in reading anything I write.
Rich
C....it's been a year since I've bookmarked.....I've bookmarked. I've needed it big time! I'm writing....thank you!
Rich, I'm getting a good deal of e-mail about this. We're all typing away between bugging each other about meeting writing deadlines. Just downloaded the template to design the book jacket cover. Looks like late night. :-)
Larry, it's turning into a natural progression. I'm learning a lot from my mentors and realize I should have done this sooner. :-)
Sweet mercy, girl! You have been soooo busy! Will this series of "How to Monetize Your Blog" posts become an ebook? I'd really like to read the series in order...
Hi C - I once looked into ISBNs from a Canadian perspective a number of years ago. It is good to get the US angle too.
Wow...the things you know about is amazing. I should just hang out on your blog and see what's next.
Cher, that's why I'm skipping about and sitting on some info. Everything that I put in the handouts are actual things already done which is why we have so much fun talking about what did and did not work out for us. Right now I'm dealing with typesetting and formatting isues. I'm going to have to go into an overview to answer my e-mails. I'm getting a nice response. :-)
Marc, it's an interesting process. I'm working into the wee hours of the morning because of the different time zones people are in. People are texting me almost 24 hours a day. :-)
Karen, I am definitely enjoying setting up the Wordy C imprint. I have a lot of intellectual property that I want to set into a royalty trust fund for my kids. I've images to license, books going to press, music sheets that need to be published, music rights to license for video and film. Publishing seems to be the natural progression of things. I'm sorting through my blog and expanding articles so the rewrites will make useful eBooks. Being an artist is the icing on the cake because I'm doing all the graphics and saving a ton of money. My kids are learning a trade and have no idea our playtime is really serious work (LOL). Stephen cracks me up because when I annoy him he tells me to "go to your room and go to work." They usually close the door after pushing me in there too. It's like having your kids treat you like a bad puppy that needs to sit and stay (LMAO) ;-)
