Always assume...

Carolyn Tann Starr 2011

Always assume...

Always assume when you unabashedly toss your life into cyberspace that everything you film, photograph and write about will eventually be read by strangers, family members, friends, enemies, freindemies, potential prospects, customers, clients, employers and/or co-workers.

Always assume there will be an expectation of privacy by those who state they do not wish to be on your blog and remember to monitor the levels of discretion you apply regarding the personalities you do feature when you do announce to your peeps that you are blogging about your mutual excursions and they are good natured enough to let you include them. You do realize you have to ask for their permission, right? They are regular people not cyberlebrities or celebrities...

It's fun talking about my family, friends and kids, sharing thoughts about where we go, what we do, what we think and how we feel about stuff in general...

What is not fun is writing a post and casually stating I don't know if I can make RainCamp only to have a spouse reference my blog post as a point of order to start a conversation to search for "a missing spouse." This is me going on the record stating there are no plans in place for me to car pool with anyone and I have not left New York City today

If you are truly my virtual social media friend you would do well to remember not to fib about what is and is not going on between us as blogging buddies. Just like your spouse can read my blog, my spouse may read yours... I routinely tell my husband what I am doing, where I am going and who I am with. When I am driving the people with me frequently answer my phone. If my hubby can't reach me but knows I am with my Mom, Mikey will simply call her.

If your husband can't reach you but thinks we are together there is nothing stopping him from calling my cell phone.

Just sayin' one of you needs to update your travel itinerary so your spouse can stop worrying about you and I am calling you out for fibbing because I have not made car pool arrangements with anyone...

Consider yourself spanked.

C- these are good reminders for everyone.  I was staging a condo this morning and wanted to take a photo of my movers from the rental company.  I thought it would be useful down the way for a post.  I made sure to ask them if I could take their picture and tell them that it would go on my blog first.  Cyberspace, blogging, Twitter etc.... require us to add another level of caution when we're communicating.

Kathy, very true because sometimes people may inadvertently find themselves placed in awkward situations they never imagined would crop up simply because of a photograph (or lack thereof). People posting willy nilly on Facebook without asking permission is a prime example of that. I posted something without permission once and got a phone call to take it down because it would get a lot of nice people in trouble. That was my personal lesson in being thoughtless and I will never forget that moment ever. Some moments have to stay private, some addresses should never be revealed and sometimes you can't say who you are with (and should never say you are with someone you are not). ;-)

C- It's a tightrope we walk in social networking.  We'll all be less likely to take a nasty fall if we consider more carefully each post (or online step) we make.

"I have not left New York City today. "

I would have driven up from Atlantic City for dinner with you.  You're worth the trip!

Great reminder to us all- C!  We sure have to stay on a thin line everyday.  What a great photo- too cute!

Kirsten, definitely on a social media tightrope. I've changed plans several times and usually chat about it when I do. It's a bit disconcerting to find out people think you're somewhere that you are not... especially when you haven't made plans to go.

Steve, when I land at Melodious I shall be blogging live from her backyard. We'll probably be driving towards you in a day or two then. I should be in TX for a few days in mid June. It's got me tickled pink. A very cool AR road trip planned a year ago. ;-)

Lizette, I have a lovely new picture of the Minion Blur. I shall try to post it tonight after I discover what the shorties have been up to. :-)
