A Word Of Advice Regarding ActiveRain Community Guidelines

A Word Of Advice Regarding ActiveRain Community Guidelines

In June 2009 I chatted about the ActiveRain Community Guidelines and provided a short set of fave quotes. Now I am going to give you guys a word of advice that should also serve as a gentle warning.

1. When you comment on a writers blog and they have the setting checked off to receive e-mail notifications your comments are forwarded from the ActiveRain server.

2. If you edit your original comment and update it on a writer's blog, the server sends an e-mail notification that you commented and provides your edited comment, so there is still a record of the first comment and the exact moment the second comment replaced the first comment on a blog post.

3. When you act as if you didn't make the first comment, and stand by the second comment as if it is the first, the e-mails from the server impeach your statement. You can't pretend the edited comment is your original comment. (If readers print this out and fax it to a writer to complain that means other people have already captured your original comment. If the writer has already downloaded and saved the web page the writer already captured your original comment).

4. If you delete your comments because people call you on it, the record has already been established and you can't take it back.

5. There is a reason why the community rules say do not attack another member. The electronic paper trail doesn't go away no matter how much you wish it would.

I know when I owe someone an apology. Do you? Stop digging a hole for yourself. Play nice in the electronic sand box people. E-mails have headers that contain time stamps, code routes and confirm origination. I have better things to do than keep telling people I am done having a particular conversation. Sometimes, you have to know when to leave people alone when they ask you to.

Like all blogging moments, this too shall pass. The question is, do you want it to pass quietly or with a big bad bang?

I vote for the quiet passing. How about you?

Please feel free to read The ActiveRain Community Guidelines here. I think sometimes we forget ourselves while we wander about cyberspace making unsubstantiated statements as if speaking from a position of authority when that position has not been granted and does not exist. It is a grave thing to commit business torts. Never casual think you can interfere with someone else's business in a public forum with impunity. You never know when a competitor may decide to make an example of you because you've provided so much for their attorney to work with. It's even worse when attorneys you don't know read it and want to volunteer to make a case for you.

Play nice people. You have no idea who is following your blog on any given day.

As for me, my work is done. I'm going to meet Sana for a snack and make arrangements to go to MD to see Margaret Rome. I'm thinking a working three day mini-vacation. One of my buyers is interested in a Maryland investment. How cool is that? Very. :-)

Hmmmmmm.  Funny, I have only EVER used edit my comment when I see that I have a typo.  You know, like when I typed duck and not deck and the spell check didn't catch it because it's a real word.  I can't imagine what underhanded person would write something nasty and click to submit it and then think they could make it go away.  Silly people.

Thanks for your post. Too bad you had to send this reminder.

I find that as a rule most people play nicely around here....play nicely folks!

Have fun on your vacation!

Have a relaxing vacation!  Thanks for the blog! It is such a shame that someone has to write or think nasty thoughts.  Life is too short for all of this.  Let's play nice!!

"C" ---- I will second your post -- play nice -- you gave me information which I had forgotten, but then I don't need to remember this, 'cause I'm always nice.

C, Maybe I'm very lucky.  If there has been any negativity in the rain lately as far as comments I've missed it.  It's such a shame that people have to be reminded to "play nice."

C, I have a sneaky suspicion that this post is a result of someone not playing nice. Hope I'm wrong.  But you are so right, there is a paper trail.   and it's not only on AR.  Unfortunately I have seen some remarks on Twitter, or FB that hang out there for all the world to see.  Great post BTW...

Tammy, I know what you mean. I have added info sometimes as well. :-)

Tony, sometimes a reminder can be helpful because people get emotionally invested with their position and cross lines they should not. I play and fool around here and talk about my life all the time. That doesn't mean I'll let every insult pass or let people trying to impose their politics on my blog have a free ride. I am pretty easy but do have pet peeves. Push the wrong button and surprise surprise...

Ann, I am scoping hotel rooms. Tried to talk hubby into taking a ride to MD but he is going to minion sit with the shorties instead. :-)

Lizette, my love, life is short so I am going to mix pleasure with business (LOL). My next post I have to spoof on Mikey being a homeowner. BB and TLW represented him on his FL purchase. I figure I have to let them rest before they do mine. I need a commercial plot so I can have an office spot. It's gonna be a quirky firm with a playroom for the kids. I might even do a ping pong spot and pool for the big minions. If you can't have fun at work where can you? Seriously (LMAO). This from the chick who can't swim, eh? ;-)

Mamma Liz, you are a sweetie indeed. Looking forward to our next SC hook up. You gotta come meet the family and check out where I want to put that office. Dad found me a real estate school in Manning. Will be down to take the classes after my birthday. I shall be invading NC as well. The East Cost run is gonna be mad fun this Summer. :-)

Carole, there are days I have to remind myself to behave (LOL). I was having cell phone therapy with Melodious all afternoon. Ran the red phone down and had to use the black one. Mikey has been cracking wise on the two of us all day. I dream of my one week vacation in TX. Gotta hit KY first because Lizette is 6 hours from Melodious. We're going shopping at the KY malls and I want KY BBQ (LOL). ;-)

Lee and Pam, sometimes conversations go places they should not. When I decide to withdraw because I don't want to go down a particular road it is never a good idea to take my kindness for weakness. It may not seem like a kindness when a person is clueless to the business torts they are committing because he/she/they think they are making themselves look good at the expense of another. Some people don't realize they are creating their own social media noose. Given enough rope they will sometimes hang themselves. In my case it wont take much to get that body swinging in the digital wind. Simply an authorization to move forward. My response? I ate cookies and wrote a post instead. I can send that text authorizing legal action any time I want to but I am playing nice. Instead I am simply saying go play on your own blog and keep your politics off of mine because we are adults and should play nice in the electronic sandbox. The people who really know me know how far I am willing to go to protect my own. If messing with my bay-bays can flip my b-switch, imagine what gets flipped when someone is dumb enough to screw with me personally and get me on the legal war path... Better for us to part ways than go down that road. I am happy to walk. I have better things to do but will do what I must if it becomes an issue.

I do the same as Tammy.  I edit comments with typos 'cos I am a perfectionist:)  Oh well, now everyone has seen my imperfections.

C,

"I vote for the quiet passing. How about you?"  Sounds like a plan!

For the last time am I'm sorry about the comment C.

All jokes aside, don't say it if you feel like you will need to take it back. And if you shouldn't say, then you sure don't need to put it in writing.

Posted by JL Boney, III, Columbia, SC Real Estate (Coldwell Banker) about 9 years ago

Jane, they have seen mine as well. In spades (LOL). :-)

Carra, I am sooooooo with you. :-)

LOL @ JL. Will be heading your way when the weather warms up. I have tracks to lay down with Alicia. Hope to see you soon. I missed you the last time I was running around bugging my parents. :-)
